The first official memorial service took place at the Airborne Cemetery in Oosterbeek on 25 September 1945, to mark those who had fallen in the Battle of Arnhem. Still now, 65 years on in 2009, the Airborne Memorial Service remains for many thousands of people the high point of the annual commemorations in September. Airborne Memorial Service draws on memories from those commemorations and the Airborne Cemetery. The author has spoken with numerous people who are or were involved in the organisation of the event, former burgomasters, veterans, next-of-kin, clergy who led the service, local citizens, and children who laid flowers during the service. The book contains many unique photographs illustrating the special nature of these commemorations, including pictures of members of the British and Dutch royal families who were present.
The book is now a collector’s item and was donated by the author in 2009 to all Arnhem veterans present from the United Kingdom, Poland and Canada.
